What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma refers to a series of eye conditions that affect the optic nerve and lead to vision loss and, if left untreated, blindness. It is usually marked by a build-up of fluid pressure in the eye, except in the case of Normal Pressure Glaucoma, where optic nerve damage is detected without a change in eye pressure.

As well as Normal Pressure Glaucoma, there are several other types of glaucoma:

• Open Angle Glaucoma – the most common form of glaucoma
• Angle Closure Glaucoma (acute or chronic) – rare, but requires immediate medical attention
• Secondary Glaucoma – develops due to inflammation, injury, or surgery

Glaucoma Symptoms

The symptoms of Angle Closure Glaucoma may include blurred vision, nausea, eye pain, and the presence of bright lights in your vision. In acute cases, these symptoms can develop quickly and will require immediate treatment to prevent complete vision loss.

However, most cases of glaucoma are painless and come with little to no symptoms aside from gradual vision loss. This is why it is important to have regular eye tests with a qualified and professional optometrist.
